I want to start by admitting that I was very skeptical about this actually working. My car has rails but no roof rack and I wanted a way to transport my stand up paddleboard. I figured it couldn’t hurt to give this a try. The experience exceeded my expectations in every way!

First, installation is incredibly easy. It didn’t take more than a few minutes for me to put the straps through the open door and tighten them inside the cabin. They even designed adhesive loops to hold the excess strap so it’s not dangling in the car or on the roof (I didn’t even notice the straps once I was in the driver’s seat). I was worried I wouldn’t be able to get it tight enough since I had to go up and over the rails in the front (in the back I was able to slide the tightener under the rail), but sure enough it was easy to get tight, and I’m not a strong person. The underside of the padded portion also has a non-stick material, which also helps prevent sliding. Despite the paddleboard being much wider than the padded portion, it was very well supported. I was exhausted after a full day of paddleboarding and hiking and erroneously attached the paddleboard right-side up instead of upside-down, which causes it to catch the wind, and the straps still held the paddleboard tight, even at 50mph – I was shocked at how secure it was! Once I got home, it was easy to remove the straps from the car in just a couple of minutes and once they dried I stored them in the convenient carrying bag, which also has a pouch to hold the instructions. Another touch I really appreciate is that any metal parts are covered in a rubberized material to make sure they don’t scratch your car. No complaints about this excellent surfboard/paddleboard strap kit! It’s perfect for anyone without a roof rack, with or without rails! I truly can’t imagine how it could be any better!

I had seen these listed before and was thinking how much time they would save me if I was able to carry my boards to and from the launch site already inflated. I usually arrive about an hour before kayak friends are launching just because I need to inflate my board especially if I’m going with someone who is borrowing one of my other iSuPs. I may have a 12v pump but it only inflates so fast and will need a break when there’s more than 2 boards to inflate. Plus the boards take up space in the hatch that carrying them already inflated on the roof frees up so much time and space. I had considered trying to do this with pool noodles and ratchet straps since I have so much experience using the ratchet straps for the roof top cargo container when I did long distance trips. But pool noodles deteriorate after one season in the sun.
I will say this would work better if I ever do get the side rails added to my car because tightening through the doors eventually is rough and can tear the rubber gasket. It also means you have straps going through the head space of front and back seats.

I do like that the clasps are covered with silicone in case they touch the car exterior. But I did find the clasps to be a bit difficult to open which is probably good for while driving but takes quite a bit of hand strength to open which may get better after more use. Still not sure it’s as secure as a ratchet strap for the tension. I like the padding and that these come in a carry case but wish they had included velcro bands for storage instead of 2 small rubber bands for the straps while folded in the case.

Overall, this is useful and will save time and space as noted above but could use some improvements for storage and tension control.

This roof rack works well for transporting surfboards and paddleboards, providing a secure and stable hold. The straps are wide and easy to adjust, making it simple to fit different vehicles. It’s a solid, affordable option for casual board transport.

  4. Yossarian

These straps are high quality, wider-than standard, with good buckles. Well protected so that they don’t scratch your car or your board. Among the higher end of similar products like this that I’ve used. It can be a bit tricky to find where to press on the buckle to get it to open, with the rubber protection but it is well worth the peace of mind.

One reviewer mentions that the pads are on the smaller side, but they are equivalent to similar racks in this class. For example, the Ho Stevie is a bit shorter. Look at the picture showing all the dimensions to check that it works with your board. I have not had issues putting bigger boards on this length, including a 9’6″ longboard. Cannot comment on a SUP.

Overall, this is a great solution that will work for your daily short-ish surf commute. I would recommend dedicated roof racks if you’re going to be traveling an hour on the highway everyday, but I don’t believe that’s what these were made for. Portable and can be used on any car.

Fit well on our VW taos. Just open the doors and put the straps around the roof and use the clamp to tighten the straps. I used them for skis and it worked well but we didn’t get up to Interstate speeds, we got up to maybe 55 and they held well. They are not as good as roof cross bars but these are more portable/packable and work pretty good. They are soft and foamy so they dont scratch the car or the skis. Pretty good product for temporary use but it would not be my first choice for everyday use because i think it might damage the door seals eventually.

Light weight , easy to install and comes with storage bag. I really like this .

I’m using these on my little Mazda2 for quick trips to the surf. Not really that quick as I live an hour away from the beach but so far so good and I haven’t lost my board yet. Build quality is really good and this is a cheap alternative before buying a rack.

I got this rack to hold down my surfboards. You can tell just by opening the box just how high of quality they are. They hold down my surfboards great and I love them. I totally recommend.

Another great product from Hang 11! I had previously purchased a set of Hang 11 surfboard Tie Down Straps and was totally stoked at their quality, design and utility! The design of this stand alone Board Rack is just brilliant and shows how well Hang 11 understands the needs of the surfer when they are transporting their boards.

The pads upon which you lay your board(s) are sturdy and protective and give a good amount of height between the roof of your car and your board. The straps are wide and thick and provide good strength, but also provide a decent amount of “softness” so they aren’t bruising your board or causing “board rash”. The straps are good and long and give you more than you need, and like their other board straps, they’re buckles and metal fittings are well protected by rubber armor to prevent them from damaging your board or car. The included carrying bag is well designed and convenient.

I will continue to look to Hang 11 for my Surfboard transportation needs, they know how to design useful and protective products for surfers. I highly recommend the Hang 11 Car Top Board Rack. It is well made, well designed, easy to use and reasonably priced. I happily give it 5 Full Stars!

Dude, this is like, totally a must-have if you’re hauling surfboards, kayaks, or whatever rad gear you wanna throw on top of your ride! (But, like, check the weight and size limits first, ya know? There are rules and stuff.) So, my bro’s got a Honda CRV—it’s kinda a smaller SUV vibe—and we’ve got a bigger SUV too, but we could never figure out a strap setup that worked for getting our ocean kayak or boards on either one. We always ended up using our buddy’s old beach truck. Such a bummer.

But now? Game-changer, dude. This thing fits super snug on the CRV’s roof rack, and it’s way easy to set up. (The mom is hardcore about not letting the new SUV get scratched—total no-go there.) Anyway, it held everything down solid while we cruised all over town looking for the perfect surf spot. When we got to the beach, it was no biggie to take everything off, stash it in the back of the CRV, and then strap it all back on when we headed home.

Seriously, it’s such a sick strap system—super well-designed and totally dependable. Stoked we found this, man!

I ordered this with the intention of putting my kayak on top of my car. I have a foldable kayak and sometimes I would like the option of already assembling it before heading to my destination. I have a very small car however and have been apprehensive about getting one of these. This carrier will hold my kayak already folded too, which will save a tremendous amount of space while camping. I will update once actually taking it out. Two thumbs up!

  12. Douglas

High quality materials and well assembled, this has all the bases covered for a basic but quality strap around the roof surfboard rack. Comes with a really nice carry case too. Silicone buckle covers are extra nice, so you don’t have to be quite so careful how you position things because your car is protected regardless.

  13. Andrea

Haven’t been able to use this yet, but this looks and feels like a very good quality. Comes with extra wide 1.5” straps, thick foam pads, an anti-slip bottom, and silicone covered buckles. Very light weight and portable. I like the storage bag for keeping it in the trunk when not in use. I love how this roof rack is temporary and not permanent. I will be testing this out on a kayak and a SUP board. Great alternative to the standard (and ugly IMO) roof racks. Would recommend!

Eliminates needing to inflate and deflate the paddle boards when we get to our destination to paddle, which is usually the lake, or one of our many local beaches. Now I can just inflate our two paddle boards before leaving home, load them up, strap them snug, and we’re off. I absolutely LOVE the convenience that now having this set up provides my wife and I, not having to go through all that inflating and deflating hassle when we get there. KOWABUNGA!
